This morning’s headline at the Detroit Free Press scares the hell out of me:
Why does this scare me? Because I’m afraid Michigan Democrats will breathe a giant sigh of relief and then promptly become complacent. And complacency is NOT something we have the luxury of enjoying in our state. We have a state House to wrest from the grip of unwaveringly lousy tea party Republicans. And we need a wide margin because the deck is stacked against us in 2018.
We only need nine seats to retake control of the state House (along with not losing any) and that’s doable. But, thanks to the heavy-handed gerrymandering by Republicans in 2000 and 2010, it’s not a given and it won’t happen without a serious get out the vote (GOTV) effort. If Democrats rest on their Clinton-is-going-to-win laurels, any chance we have of a Democratic House majority goes out the window.
So, ignore the polls and sign up for some GOTV shifts NOW! Don’t wait until Election Day. Don’t put it off at all. Get started now so we can take back the House, put a couple of great progressive judges on the state Supreme Court, and make sure our university boards and state Board of Education have Democratic majorities on them, too, while you’re at it.
In other words, GOTMFV.
