Weird news about Dennis Kucinich

Dennis Kucinich broke a tooth on an olive pit in a sandwich he bought at the Congressional cafeteria. He’s suing them. For a LOT of money:

Kucinich didn’t detail the costs of the dental work, or precisely what “enjoyment” he lost. Or why he’s filing a complaint three years after the olive incident. But he’s suing Restaurant Associates and three other companies involved in running and supplying the cafeteria for $150,000, claiming negligence and breach of implied warranty.

I have to say, this really surprises me. Not that Congressman Kucinich is suing them but that its for so much. Because they missed a pit.…

Congressman Paul Broun is an idiot

It’s bad enough that he had this year’s “You LIE!” moment during the President’s State of the Union Address last night. But the depth of Congressman Broun’s idiocy runs much deeper, apparently. Check out this tweet from earlier that evening:

Corporate Tax rates should be zero.

Not only do corporations hold immense sway in Congress due to mammoth political contributions, they are treated as humans by the courts on issues such as free speech. They benefit most when our country is prosperous and are asked the least when it comes to sacrificing when times are bad.

And now this idiot wants to free them from the oppressive burden of paying their taxes so they can accumulate even more wealth into the hands of a few and contribute nothing back to the society that allows them to be successful in the first place.…

Oh, look. The president isn’t throwing poor people under the bus.

As I predicted last weekend, the President proved last night he isn’t going to cut benefits for the poor and others on Social Security.

From his second State of the Union Address:

To put us on solid ground, we should also find a bipartisan solution to strengthen Social Security for future generations. We must do it without putting at risk current retirees, the most vulnerable, or people with disabilities; without slashing benefits for future generations; and without subjecting Americans’ guaranteed retirement income to the whims of the stock market.

I’m going to file this under “Supports the Poor” in my Obama files.…

This year’s State of the Union “You LIE!” moment

Like last year, where Rep. Joe Wilson shouted “You LIE!” at President Obama in the middle of his State of the Union Address, this year’s Address had a similarly offensive moment, this one courtesy of a tweet from Rep. Paul Broun of Georgia:

Mr. President, you don’t believe in the Constitution. You believe in socialism.

Strangely, he followed this up later with a tweet calling the President’s Address a “good speech”.

You know, for a socialist.

I’m just sayin’…

Disqus commenting acting wonky

Disqus comments appear to be not loading for some reason. I have contacted Disqus and hope to have the problem resolved soon. Stay tuned…

UPDATE: The issue appears to be related only mobile browsers and iPads. I haven’t tried it with non-iPhones, however. I’m not sure what happened because I can still view Disqus comments on other blogs and it was working fine one minute then not working at all two minutes later.

UPDATE 2 (1/26/2011): Disqus commenting on mobile devices is working again.

Obama admin considering raising fuel economy std. to 62 mpg

Last October, the Obama administration announced that it is considering raising auto fuel economy standards to as high as 62 mpg by 2025. The move went mostly under the radar.

The White House has said it is considering a range of fuel economy standards for 2017 to 2025, with 62 mpg being on the high end, and the alliance said it is working closely with the Environmental Protection Agency and the Transportation Department on the new rules.

Republicans and businesses are, predictably, freaking out, including the Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers. According to the Wall Street Journal a week and a half ago the trade group sent a letter to Congressmen Darrell Issa (R., Calif.) and Fred Upton (R., Mich.) to complain.…

The very real attack on Obama’s mythical attack on Social Security

Updated to correct a mistake regarding Medicare vs. Social Security.

It all started when somebody over at Firedoglake (FDL) derisively labeled President Obama’s deficit reduction study committee “The Catfood Commission”. The complete asinine nature of such an offensive characterization is epic. I assume it’s called that because they believe it will lead to old people eating catfood instead of human food because it will be all they can afford after President Obama is done gutting their social security and other benefits.

In other words, they are suggesting that President Obama is a foe to poor people.

No, really. That’s the implication: that a man who spent most of his early career on the front lines fighting for the rights of those at the lower reaches of the socio-economic ladder is, now that he’s in a position of true and awesome power, going to use that power to further damage the position of poor people.…

What the…?

Vegetarians save money on their car insurance? What the…?

Seriously. This was one of the ads I saw on my Facebook page:

I clicked through and it was even more ridiculous:

Entering my zip code and clicking through took me to an insurance company’s webpage which, of course, had nothing to do with me being a vegetarian. So it’s a clear example of companies using the information about me that they have purchased from Facebook to steer ads in my direction.

Makes you wonder if I had put “masturbation” as one of the interests in my profile I would have gotten this ad:

I’m just sayin’…
