So much for Straight TalkingTM your way to the presidency…
As you know, earlier this week, Senator John McCain ran a scurrilous ad saying that Senator Obama decided not to visit wounded troops in Germany on the European leg of his trip abroad. Instead, the ad claims, he chose to go to the gym because he wouldn’t be allowed to take cameras with him to the hospital.
Now all this has been completely debunked and called what it is: a lie.
Well, it seems that Senator McCain had another video up his sleeve if Senator Obama HAD gone to visit the troops. Read it and weep:
The McCain campaign had adopted an ad strategy that has been dubbed “desperate” by Time Magazine political columnist Joe Klein. Klein was writing in response to this latest ad from McCain’s new ad/communications honcho Steve Schmidt. Klein writes that a candidate airs this ad only if: “1. You’re desperate. 2. Your Middle East policy has been superseded by events and abandoned by your allies. 3. You apparently have nothing substantive to say about America’s future role in the region and the world.”
What the McCain campaign doesn’t want people to know, according to one GOP strategist I spoke with over the weekend, is that they had an ad script ready to go if Obama had visited the wounded troops saying that Obama was…wait for it…using wounded troops as campaign props. So, no matter which way Obama turned, McCain had an Obama bashing ad ready to launch. I guess that’s political hardball. But another word for it is the one word that most politicians are loathe to use about their opponents—a lie.
Please, will one of you McCain supporters explain to me again why it is you’re supporting this creep? He’s so unpresidential that he’s become a joke.
I’m just sayin’…
