Citing his need to be well-rested for Saturday’s Final Four games which begin at 6:00 p.m. Eastern, President Barack Obama today announced that he will be returning early from the G-20 Summit in Europe. Additionally, he has cancelled all visits with leaders of various countries around the world including Britain, Russia, China, India and South Korea.
“While we appreciate the historic nature of the President’s first visit to Europe since his election,” said White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs, “This year’s Final Four is just too exciting for him to miss. He needs to be well-rested so that he can join with millions and millions of other Americans as they watch the best young basketball players in the country vie for the title of National Champion. Let’s put it this way: the world economic crisis and Europe will all still be there a couple of weeks from now.”
President Obama filled out his bracket before the “March Madness” tournament began, prompting Republicans to criticize him, suggesting he should stick to fixing the economic crisis left to him by his predecessor. With only one team among his bracket picks remaining in the Final Four, it would appear they were right.
Nonetheless, his pick to win the tournament, the North Carolina Tar Heels, are still in contention prompting the President’s early return from Europe.
According to Gibbs, “The President feels confident that his selection of the Tar Heels will be vindicated and he wants to be ready to call their coach, Roy Williams, when they clinch the title. He feels certain the leaders of the many foreign countries he is cancelling on will understand.”
