I’m on strike. I absolutely refuse to go shopping today unless it’s for life-sustaining food or drink.
Today is Buy Nothing Day. It’s “sponsored” (promoted?) by Adbusters.org, the organization founded by Kalle Lasn, author of “Culture Jam: How to Reverse America’s Suicidal Consumer Binge–And Why We Must”
There are events all around the globe. I participated this morning.
How did I participate? I woke up bright and early at 5:00 a.m. I rolled over, looked at the clock, made a conscious decision NOT to get out of bed to go shopping for “deals”, rolled over, snuggled with my wife and went back to sleep. Then, just for emphasis, I popped my arm out from under the toasty quilt and flipped my middle finger.
That was my blow against the ridiculous consumer fetish of shopping like idiots the day after Thanksgiving.
Other plans for the day include having my kids over for a meal. We’re going to a museum. Then we’ll eat food, much of which was grown in our garden. Later tonight we’ll play Settlers of Catan.
We’ll eat, drink, talk, look at art, play games.
But we will not buy anything that isn’t food.
Join us?
I’m just sayin’…
