So, let’s get this straight. This week Republicans:
Filibustered to death a bill that would “would provide medical benefits and compensation for emergency workers who were first on the scene of the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks”. The 911 responders, aka “heroes”, were thereby denied this essential compensation.
Republicans also voted down the International Protecting Girls by Preventing Child Marriage Act of 2010 which sought to protect young girls from basically becoming sex slaves by recognizing child marriage “as a human rights violation, and develop comprehensive strategies to prevent such marriages around the world”.
And, finally, Republicans, fresh off taking millions of unemployed Americans hostage, proceeded to take the entire planet hostage when Senator Bob Corker threatened to stop a vote on the US/Russia START treaty that would control nuclear weapons proliferation. Why did he do this? Because he doesn’t want there to be an up or down vote on ending the military’s absurdly discriminatory and odious Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell policy.
All of this after they shot down an omnibus spending bill because, among other things, it contained earmarks, hundreds of which REPUBLICANS PUT IN IT and kicked it down the road by passing government funding extension that runs out Tuesday. And, of course, on Tuesday, they will have the same bill to vote on full of their own earmarks that they promised never to put into any more bills but which they did anyway and now will vote against.
Will someone please wake up the media because they are failing this country. There’s no way this stuff should be happening with a national uprising and the only reason there isn’t a national uprising is because people don’t know about it and the only reason people don’t know about it is that the media conveniently neglected to mention it.
By the way, if you haven’t seen John Stewart’s Daily Show interview with some 911 responders who are suffering from health problems, treat yourself to it now. It’s at once hilarious and painful.
I’m just sayin’…
