National Lakeshore, Lake Michigan, MichiganHere you will find some of the most spectacular coastal dunes in the world — I especially liked trekking up the huge dune on the north end of this expansive park. There are a variety of beaches with fine to grainy sand and clean, clear water. Children often play and look for Petoskey stones (beautiful pebbles of fossilized coral) in the small, shallow creeks that drain into Lake Michigan, where the water is warmer than the lake.
Dr. Beach is a guy who rates beaches around the world. He received a lot of grief people from the Great Lakes region for not giving our beaches the attention they deserve. Well, he finally succumbed. And the beach area he chose as the best is the very area that my wife and I travel to every year for a camping trip or two. On or around August 22nd you will almost always find us there and ON August 22nd, you’ll find us in the evening around sunset hanging out on Sunset Beach with a bottle of champagne. Why? Because we were married on that beach on August 22nd, 2004.
