The Obamacare insurance marketplaces open on October 1. Get smart. Get ready.

You’re going to have a lot more choices when it comes to health insurance thanks to Obamacare, especially if you don’t have insurance or buy your own. The marketplaces where you can shop for insurance open October 1, with coverage kicking in January 1, 2014.

That means it’s not too soon to learn everything you can about your options for healthcare coverage.

This weekend, Get Covered America is hosting events nationwide to help consumers learn more about Obamacare and the new options you’ll have. Click here to find an event near you.

On Tuesday, September 10, Michigan State Representative Gretchen Driskell will host an informational session about health care options in Michigan from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Scio Farms, 6655 Jackson Road in Ann Arbor. Discussion topics include the Affordable Care Act, Medicaid expansion and a question-and-answer session about health care in Michigan. Joining Driskell at the event will be Marianne Udow-Phillips, director of the Center for Healthcare Research and Transformation; Josh Fangmeier, a policy analyst at CHRT; and Ellen Rabinowitz, executive director of the Washtenaw Health Plan.

Can’t make it to any of these events? You can always visit Healthcare.gov any time to get details about the new health insurance marketplaces. If your state isn’t creating its own marketplace, never fear. You’ll be able to take advantage of the federal marketplace — and Healthcare.gov is the place to go to register for updates and start shopping for coverage starting October 1.

Get smart and get covered.
