Progressive – n. someone who believes the future can be better than the past

The greatest irony of American life — besides the fact that states from the Old Confederacy are among most likely to be dependent on the federal government — is that the progressive movement was born in the Republican party.
The far right — led by pathological rantings Glenn Beck — has spent most of the Obama administration trying to demonize the P-word in the same way Reagan used the word “liberal” to conjure images of liberals reaching into your pocket to fund welfare queens and patchouli-soaked college dropouts. It seems the massive attempt at reducing inequality known as Obamacare along with new rights for those with pre-existing conditions and the LGBTQ community reminded some people of a time when the tide first turned against the a government that operated for the benefit of a few.
With the release of Ken Burn’s The Roosevelts: An Intimate History this fall, a far better genealogy of the movement that helped create America’s middle class will be introduced to millions — including, I hope, its shameful complicity with segregation which reached its apex during the presidency of Woodrow Wilson.
Burns’ documentary draws from Doris Kearns Goodwin whose Pulitzer Prize-winning book about the split in the GOP at the beginning of the 20th century The Bully Pulpit: Theodore Roosevelt, William Howard Taft, and the Golden Age of Journalism is being released in paperback along with the release of the film.
And we’d like to help you get in the mood by digging into the details.
