President Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama made culinary history when they served homebrewed White House Honey Ale, made with a pound of honey from the White House Beehive, to guests at last month’s Super Bowl party. They are the first presidential couple to ever charge their chefs with the ancient–and now wildly popular–art of homebrewing, according to White House Curator Bill Allman.~SNIP~
Yes, President George Washington was a well-known homebrewer. President Washington is also the only president who never lived in the White House.
It’s a really neat article that highlights a variety of “firsts” for the Obama White House: the Kitchen Garden which is the first garden on the White House grounds since World War II, the first beehive on the White House property resulting in the first honey production, hops being considered for the White House garden, the first administration to bring in guest chefs for White House State Dinners, and the first time food cooking demonstrations have been done during the White House Easter Egg Roll.
Now I just have to figure out a way to get an invitation to lunch at the White House. Hmmm … who can I call …?
Adding… It was reported on NPR’s The Two-Way blog (along with a host of other websites) that the President himself is brewing the beer. This is not true.
