Yet more Michigan Republican face recalls

by

Michigan Senator Judy Emmons (R-Sheridan) from Michigan’s 33rd Senate District has had recall paperwork filed against her.

Recall fever in Michigan is now targeting state Sen. Judy Emmons.

On Wednesday, the Sheridan Republican became the latest state lawmaker who might be subjected to a recall election. Montcalm County officials received petition language in the mail seeking her ouster for supporting business tax reform and a pension tax increase.

Montcalm County Clerk Kristen Millard confirmed that her office received the petition request from Deanna Porter of Evergreen Township in Montcalm County, but the request is not yet considered official because Porter did not provide a notarized signature.
Porter said Wednesday she planned to properly sign the petition request today.
“We have lost a huge employer in this area, and there were lots of people who were forced into early retirement. Some were able to take their pensions, and now they want to tax that,” said Porter, a 72-year-old pensioner. “Now they are going to give corporations a big break, and they are doing it on the backs of senior citizens.”

Emmons is now the fourth state senator to be targeted for a recall. The other three are Mike Nofs (R-Battle Creek), John Moolenaar (R-Midland), and Howard Walker (R-Traverse City), all because of their support of Rick Snyder’s tax proposals which grant businesses an 86% tax cut and raise taxes on the poor and elderly while slashing K-12 education funding. The original recall paperwork against Walker was withdrawn but is expected to be refiled according to the Michigan Information & Research Service (MIRS).

UPDATE: Senators aren’t the only ones being targeted. In addition to Rep. Al Pscholka and the eight others I blogged about recently, you can add State Rep. Joel Johnson of Clare and House Speaker Jase Bolger of Marshall.

Michigan Republicans are pissing off their base by taxing pensions. Seniors are far more likely to be Republican and they are far more likely to vote. Jumping on Rick Snyder’s tax-the-pensions bandwagon may well spell doom for some of them.

Works for me.

Adding…it seems to me the Rick Snyder’s budget is the state-level version of Paul Ryan’s budget at the national level. It’s toxic to the GOP and a perfect, winning target for Dems to take their shots at.
