Well this doesn’t happen every day
My mother was an early feminist in the late 70s/early 80s. She marched on Washington, D.C. for the Equal Rights Amendment. My first “activism” action was to join her and a handful of other ladies on a road trip for a similar march in Chicago where Bella Abzug and Gloria Steinem and many other leading feminists spoke.
And we always had Ms. magazine hanging around. When I was around ten years old, I read Ms. magazine all the time. It had a significant impact on my perceptions about women and how they are viewed and treated in society.
Yesterday, a post we put up was linked and photos we took were posted at Ms. magazine’s website in a piece titled “The War on Women, Michigan Front”. (UPDATE: Today, they linked us again – “My Michigan Knows How Treat a Vagina”.)
My mom, who passed away several years ago, would have been very proud of that.
But there’s something she would have been even MORE proud of, I think.
A month ago, I posted a piece titled “More misogyny in the Michigan House of Representatives – Rep Frank Foster calls nurses union staffer a c**t”. It’s the story of Republican Rep. Frank Foster calling a nurses union staffer, Julia Smith-Heck, a “cunt”. Actually, he shouted it at her from the street for all to hear. That piece went pretty viral at the time but, in the past few days, it’s gone even more viral, and now has had over 23,000 page views.
Here’s a photo of Julia from the rally in Lansing on Monday. She’s on the right:
I tweeted about the new life of that post to the Michigan Nurses Association because they were the ones who broke the original story of Julia being called a cunt.
@minurses My piece about Frank Foster has gone viral again. It got picked up by Fark, Wonkette, & others. 21K+ views! http://t.co/JA4OBUQU
