Corporations are not people, money is not speech
A coalition of people in the Ann Arbor area are putting together a working group to join the national push to repeal the corrupting Citizens United Supreme Court ruling. The nearly unlimited amount of corporate money flooding into our electoral process is already having a corrosive impact on our democracy.
One of the national groups working against the ruling is Move To Amend. Their goal is a constitutional amendment that says, in essence, corporations are not people and money is not speech. Here’s the text of their amendment:
We, the People of the United States of America, reject the U.S. Supreme Court’s ruling in Citizens United, and move to amend our Constitution to firmly establish that money is not speech, and that human beings, not corporations, are persons entitled to constitutional rights.
David Cobb is a spokesperson for Move to Amend. He is eloquent and passionate on this issue and, next Friday, June 29, 2012, he will be in Ann Arbor. The event is free and open to the public.
