That fresh-faced 27-year-old in the picture there on the right is Steve Marino, a Macomb County Commissioner who is running for the State House in the 24th House District.
He’s also either a tax cheat, sleazy lobbyist, unmitigated liar, or all of the above, and a guy who has no respect whatsoever for House Speaker Kevin Cotter.
The Michigan Democratic Party recently recorded Marino saying some pretty outlandish things. You can read all about them in the two posts linked above or by going to LobbyistSteveMarino.com. Today they released some new recordings and all I can say is … WOW!
Right now the life expectancy for a female is 81, 79-and-a-half for a male. I mean, make it [retirement age] 70, 75. That way people aren’t building it into their retirement plan […]
It [Social Security] was never meant to be built into your retirement plan. It was supposed to be there when your retirement plan failed.
If you’re like me, you’re looking forward to the day when you can retire. You’ve been paying into the Social Security system, which is basically a retirement insurance policy, for your entire working life and when you hit retirement age, 66 or 67 depending on when you were born, you’ll get to reap the benefits of that insurance policy. Now imagine having to work and extra eight or nine years because some youngster thinks you shouldn’t be counting on it. That’s the upshot of what Marino is proposing.
By the way, Marino is dead wrong about what Social Security is all about. Here’s what President Roosevelt said when he signed the Social Security Act in 1935:
We can never insure one hundred percent of the population against one hundred percent of the hazards and vicissitudes of life, but we have tried to frame a law which will give some measure of protection to the average citizen and to his family against the loss of a job and against poverty-ridden old age.
There is nothing in that statement meant imply that Social Security is only there for when your retirement plan fails. As AFL-CIO President Ron Bieber put it, “it’s painfully clear that he doesn’t give a rip about working people. He’s out of touch, and he sure doesn’t belong anywhere near the Michigan House of Representatives.”
Thankfully, voters in the 24th District have a reasonable and sane option: Democrat Dana Camphous-Peterson. If you’d like to help out her campaign and help her make sure Steve Marino never gets to push to have his insulting plan put into place, head over to her website DanaForStateHouse and sign up today.
