Support Walmart strikers, check out the Walmart Holiday Calendar to learn more about their abuse of workers

Another day, another abuse

The Corporate Action Network describe themselves as “a hub to support campaigns that work to expose, end and prosecute corporate abuse and to restore balance to our economy, creating a more prosperous and just society.” Their latest effort is in support of striking Walmart workers. Spurred by the Black Friday demonstrations @ Walmart stores, they have created a “Walmart Holiday Calendar” that lets people stay involved through the holiday season and stay in touch with the campaign.

Every day, from now through the end of the year, a new abuse of Walmart workers is revealed.

UPDATED: As more groups sign on to Tuesday’s Lansing rally, conservative groups reserve Capitol steps to thwart them

This should be interesting

Next week, the state legislature reconvenes on Tuesday. When they get to work that morning, they will be greeted by thousands of outraged Michiganders who are there to let these lawmakers know that the Right to Work for Less legislation — or Right to Freeload as some are calling it — it an afront to the citizens of the birthplace of labor unions.

I wrote yesterday about the involvement in the rally as well as that of Planned Parenthood. Now, with other groups signing on, we learn that conservative groups have reserved the Capitol Building grounds in an effort to stop their rally.

Michigan: When Plutocrats Rule

Michigan: When Plutocrats Rule

It’s time for ACTION!

I have a piece up today at the AFL-CIO NOW blog that discusses the travesty that happened at the state capitol yesterday. I wanted to expand on a couple of things that I discussed there. Mainly, that the Republicans, including Governor Rick Snyder are complete and utter hypocrites on the topic of unions and union-crushing Right to Work for Less (RTWFL) laws.

Much more including how YOU can get involved after the jump.

President Obama weighs in on Michigan’s Right to Work for Less attack on unions

President Obama weighs in on Michigan’s Right to Work for Less attack on unions

Stuff just got real

President Obama has weighed in on the Republican push to destroy unions in Michigan.

Considering that President Obama said nearly nothing during the anti-union war in Wisconsin last year, this is huge.

Thank you, President Obama.

UPDATED x2: Michigan to become nation’s 24th “Right to Work for Less” state

UPDATED x2: Michigan to become nation’s 24th “Right to Work for Less” state

This is what happens when you vote Republican

In a move that surprises just about nobody, Governor Rick Snyder announced at press conference this morning that when anti-union Republicans send “Right to Work for Less” (RTWFL) legislation to his desk, he will sign it.

After spending the past year being coy about his position on RTWFL, it was widely suspected that he would support such legislation. With gerrymandered districts ensuring Republican dominance for the foreseeable future, the will of Michiganders as a whole is being thwarted by a cadre of drunk-with-power ideologues that have been waiting for decades to jam anti-union, anti-worker, anti-woman and pro-Big Business bills through the legislature and into law. The perfect storm of the 2010 midterm election and the redistricting that happened the following year gave them their opportunity.

UPDATED: Are over half of Mich African Americans about to be under the control of an Emergency Financial Mgr?

Look out, Detroit! It’s coming right for ya!

The Detroit Free Press is reporting this afternoon that an Emergency Financial Manager is being called “inevitable” for Detroit. If that happens, over half of the African Americans in Michigan will be under the rule of an Emergency Financial Manager, with little to no say in the operation of their local government.

Governor Snyder takes sides on Right to Work for Less — It’s now “on the table”

Governor Snyder takes sides on Right to Work for Less — It’s now “on the table”

And the winner is… the anti-Labor conservatives

NOTE: This is an abbreviated version of a post I published at the AFL-CIO NOW blog. Click HERE to read the whole piece.

For months and months, Michigan Governor Rick Snyder has been playing Switzerland on the topic of “Right to Work For Less” (RTWFL) — the Orwellian-named anti-labor union drive — saying “It’s not on my agenda” but never promising to veto RTWFL legislation. He literally used that exact phrase every single time he was asked about it right up until this past week.

Today, all of that changed. After a meeting with top Republican leaders from the state House and Senate, it’s now “on the table”.

Corporate profits have soared while wages plummet – a story in two graphs

Corporate profits have soared while wages plummet – a story in two graphs

The rich are getting richer BECAUSE the poor are getting poorer

As we munch popcorn and watch the Republicans in their death match with President Obama over the fiscal speed bump and whether or not our economy will tumble to the ground if we raise taxes on the super-rich by 3.9%, a big part of the rhetoric we hear from the GOP is that this is a tax on business owners. Besides the fact that this is largely untrue and that in the small percentage of businesses affected, it only raises taxes on their income OVER $250,000 year, the fact is that our country’s economy is largely driven by large corporations and the contribution to Gross Domestic Product (GDP) by small businesses is shrinking.

Big businesses, as it turns out, are doing just fine. Workers’ wages, on the other hand? Not so much.

UPDATED: Michigan GOP education “reform” drawing fire from across the state, Muskegon Hts. charter failing miserably

Rushing through an ideological experiment because they can — not because it’s smart Michigan Republicans have embarked on what they are calling “reform” of our state’s K-12 school system. They are rushing to implement plans long proposed by conservative, anti-teacher groups like the Mackinac Center for Public Policy with laws that would increase the number of charter schools, impeded the […]

Prohibition Repeal Day, December 5 (with PHOTOS) — Come help us celebrate in Ann Arbor

Everything in moderation, including moderation Chris and I have a healthy relationship with alcohol. Not so much the “conducive to, or promoting good health” definition of healthy, but more like “of a satisfactory size or amount” definition. We do enjoy an adult beverage from time to time. And by “time” I mean “day”. It’s fair to say that if we […]
