An EAA teacher on why she quit: “You are the most unprofessional people I’ve ever worked with”

An EAA teacher on why she quit: “You are the most unprofessional people I’ve ever worked with”

Today’s interview is with Karyn Brooks, a former teacher at the Mary McLeod Bethune Elementary-Middle School, or “Bethune” as everyone generally calls it. Karyn is unique among the teachers with whom I have spoken because she had the good sense to get out of the EAA before the end of its first calendar year of existence. She took a more […]

EAA Chancellor Covington “supports” Dept of Education ending exclusivity contract – but won’t let them out of it

On Wednesday of this past week, news broke that State Superintendent Mike Flanagan was ending a 15-year exclusivity contract with the Governor Rick Snyder’s failed experiment with Detroit children known as the Education Achievement Authority. The contract specified that the State School Reform/Redesign District (SSRRD) would only place “low performing” schools in the EAA. By ending that part of the […]

This afternoon the 1,300-member Ann Arbor/Ypsilanti Regional Chamber issued the following statement regarding Governor Rick Snyder’s failed education experiment with Detroit students known as the Education Achievement Authority: The A2Y Chamber’s Executive Board held a deliberation on HB 4369, legislation to expand the Education Achievement Authority (EAA). The A2Y Chamber encourages the Michigan Legislature to reject the current House version […]

Eastern Michigan University students and faculty rally to call for severing ties with the EAA

Yesterday nearly 50 intrepid souls braved the “raining Slurpees” weather to attend a rally on the campus of Eastern Michigan University. They were there to protest EMU’s partnership with Governor Snyder’s failed education experiment with Detroit students – the Education Achievement Authority. The event was organized by the campus group Students for an Ethical and Participatory Education (SEPE) and was […]

An EAA grab bag: no vote yet in House, EAA supporter(s) rush to the defense of Nolan principal, and more

Just a few odds and ends from the world of the Education Achievement Authority, Gov. Rick Snyder’s failed education experiment with Detroit students. First, although a vote had been predicted yesterday, various reporting suggests that Republicans in the House and Senate are still struggling to come to an agreement on what the expansion of the EAA should look like. Some […]

UPDATED: Life under an EAA principal: “Any teachers who allow students in the hallway shall receive a formal letter of reprimand”

NOTE: In the comments of this post and another one titled “An EAA teacher elaborates on the treatment of special ed students: ‘These kids deserve so much better’”, there are multiple comments from the same person, making it look as if there more supporters of Nolan school principal Angela Underwood than there really are. The comments are from one of […]

Some things you need to know about the Education Achievement Authority as lawmakers consider their votes

As faculty and students at Eastern Michigan University gather at a rally today to urge their Board of Regents to sever their educational institution’s relationship with Governor Snyder’s failed Educational Achievement Authority experiment in Detroit, lawmakers in Lansing are whipping votes to pass legislation that will expand it statewide and codify it into law. Yesterday’s bombshell news that State Superintendent […]

EAA Teacher of the Year on why she quit: “I was compromising my moral integrity and I couldn’t live with myself”

NOTE: There are two comments at the bottom of this interview disparaging both me and the interviewee, former EAA Teacher of the Year Kim Jurczak. One goes by the name “Lyeyname” and the other by “Mypost”. Both comments came from the same IP address meaning that they were made by the same person masquerading as different people to make it […]

Rep. Ellen Lipton responds to news that State Departement of Education is ending exclusivity contract with the EAA

I don’t normally just reprint press releases but this one is so well done and so perfect that I couldn’t really add much to it. Ellen Lipton has been a fierce, fierce warrior in the battle to save Michigan’s public schools. Along with Sen. Hopgood, she was, for far too long, a lone voice calling out the Education Achievement Authority […]

EAA Chief & GOP sponsor of expansion bill: “Opponents will stop at nothing to maintain status quo, are ‘criminal’.”

EAA Chief & GOP sponsor of expansion bill: “Opponents will stop at nothing to maintain status quo, are ‘criminal’.”

Spin, baby, spin

Yesterday, EAA Chancellor John Covington and Republican Chair of the House Education Committee Rep. Lisa Lyons appeared on the Current State program to discuss the Education Achievement Authority. In clear defensive mode, both of them sought to characterize anyone who opposes the EAA as the only solution to the intractable problems facing the Detroit Public School system as “defending the status quo” and being “outright criminal”.

The audio, excerpts, and commentary after the jump.

BREAKING: Michigan Department of Education to end exclusivity agreement with EAA

WOW! NOTE: My commentary on this development can be found HERE. Not a good week for the Education Achievement Authority and its leader John Covington. First, MLive reporter Jeff Wattrick’s article from 2011 is being circulated again, reminding all of us that Covington’s so-called turnaround success in Kansas City fell apart after he left when the district he controlled lost […]
