Michigan GOP bows to tea party pressure, Medicaid expansion & state run health insurance exchange all but dead

Michigan GOP bows to tea party pressure, Medicaid expansion & state run health insurance exchange all but dead

You have to give them credit for taking government back — to a time when it didn’t care about the poor

Tea party groups in Michigan appear to have succeeded in preventing an expansion of Medicaid that would have given health insurance to nearly a half million working poor Michiganders and preventing the formation of a state-run health insurance exchange. The actions will cost the state millions and millions of dollars, ensure that fewer people have health coverage than would have under the provisions of the Affordable Care Act and, ironically, help take the country a step closer to a single-payer health care system in the long run.

On Wednesday, the House Appropriations subcommittee passed their annual budget bill without the inclusion of the expansion of Medicaid that Governor Snyder, doctors, and hospitals across the state supported emphatically. Even tea party governors like Florida’s Rick Scott support this element of “Obamacare” since it would mean coverage of millions of their residents while relieving the burden on their hospital systems. They also kicked poor people in the teeth in a couple of other ways, as well.

Michigan Gov. Snyder: “Time running out on state-run health ins. exchange”, tea party ramps up effort to kill it

Michigan Gov. Snyder: “Time running out on state-run health ins. exchange”, tea party ramps up effort to kill it

Sorry, face. This nose has got to go

Governor Rick Snyder is warning Michigan Republican legislators that time is running out to set up a state-run health insurance exchange under the Affordable Care Act (“Obamacare”.) As Gov. Snyder points out, we have the choice of doing this in a way that is customized for Michigan or letting the federal government do it for us.

Meanwhile, tea party groups in Michigan are working overtime to kill it, a position I have come to cheer on. Click through to see why.

South Carolina turns down Medicaid expansion that would benefit 236,000 because President Obama is black

South Carolina turns down Medicaid expansion that would benefit 236,000 because President Obama is black

They said it, not me

South Carolina Republicans have decided not to expand Medicaid in their state as provided under the Affordable Care Act (“Obamacare”.) By doing this, they are turning down $11 billion in federal funds and risk the creation of upwards of 44,000 jobs.

Why did they do this? According Republican state House Representative Kris Crawford, it’s because President Barack Obama is black.

You think I’m kidding but I’m not. Details after the jump.

Florida GOP votes against Medicaid expansion, wants to pull out of Medicaid completely

Florida GOP votes against Medicaid expansion, wants to pull out of Medicaid completely

Ideology trumps intelligence in Florida

This week, a Florida Senate committee rejected the expansion of Medicaid to its poorest residents, a vote that followed a similar vote in the House and a surprise endorsement by its tea partying governor. Not only that, the bill’s Republican sponsor declared that he wants Florida out of the Medicaid business altogether.

Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder gives full-throated endorsement of Medicaid expansion, tea party freaks

Well hallelujah…

In what was not by any far stretch of the imagination a forgone conclusion, Michigan Governor Rick Snyder gave his hearty endorsement to the expansion of Medicaid coverage in Michigan as part of the Affordable Care Act. I couldn’t be more pleased.

Tea partiers in Michigan, however? Not so pleased.

All the fun after the jump.

Michigan Gov. Snyder concerned about Medicaid expansion diverting uninsured from emergency room-based health care

Michigan Gov. Snyder concerned about Medicaid expansion diverting uninsured from emergency room-based health care

Wait. What???

With Medicaid expansion under the Affordable Care Act poised to free nearly half a million Michiganders from having to get their healthcare from emergency rooms and save the state $10 million in the first ten years, our Governor, Rick Snyder, appears to be wavering because of ‘capacity’. This is despite a report that came out this month indicating that Michigan doctors are ready, willing and able to take on the influx of uninsured patients.

So, what, we should just let them keep going to emergency rooms for their healthcare? More after the jump.

Michigan doctors ready & willing for Medicaid expansion — IF the GOP allows it

Michigan doctors ready & willing for Medicaid expansion — IF the GOP allows it

How about it Republicans? Do you care for Michiganders or not?

With Republicans actively seeking to prevent the expansion of Medicaid in Michigan under the Affordable Care Act and Democrats seeking to make it happen, doctors in Michigan are ready, willing and able to take on the new influx of patients that would entail. Think about it: a savings of $1 billion over ten years, 400,000 new Michiganders covered by health insurance and doctors expanding their practices to accomodate.

Who could be against THAT? Only conservative ideologues, that’s who.

Hurting the Middle Class to spite Obama: GOP Senator introduces bill to prevent Medicaid expansion in Michigan

Hurting the Middle Class to spite Obama: GOP Senator introduces bill to prevent Medicaid expansion in Michigan

Sorry face, this nose has got to go

It what can only be described as one of the most intentionally childishly mean-spirited, hurt-people-to-spite-Obama acts in recent Michigan history, state Senator Bruce Caswell from Hillsdale has introduced legislation that specifically prohibits Michigan from expanding Medicaid coverage as permitted under the Affordable Care Act.

Just so we’re clear: it’s not that he’s just suggesting that we not do this incredibly smart and money-saving, life-saving thing. He is actively seeking to make it illegal to do so.

Details of this pathetically childish insanity after the jump.

5 ways Republican governors are screwing their citizens by turning down Medicaid expansion

If you liked the “public option”, you’ll LOVE Medicaid expansion When the Affordable Care Act takes full effect in 2014, millions of Americans will have the freedom of knowing that they’re not one trip to the emergency room away from bankruptcy. They won’t have to be afraid of telling a doctor about a health problem for fear of being branded […]

State Rep Andy Schor introduces resolution to expand Medicaid in Michigan

State Rep Andy Schor introduces resolution to expand Medicaid in Michigan

C’mon, Governor Snyder, do the right thing

As regular readers of this site know, we have been calling on Michigan Governor Rick Snyder to expand Medicaid coverage in our state, one of the many excellent provisions of the Affordable Care Act (ACA, aka “Obamacare”.) You can read LOLGOP’s pieces on this HERE and HERE and my piece HERE.

Now the Michigan Democrats are starting to move on this issue. Today, State Representative Andy Schor (D-Lansing) introduced a House Resolution today calling on Governor Snyder to expand Medicaid under the federal ACA.

As Rep. Schor notes in his press release, “under the ACA, the cost of expanding Medicaid to more residents would be covered 100 percent by the federal government from 2014 through 2016. After that, the federal government would cover no less than 90 percent of the cost.”

Much more after the jump.
